Practice Makes Perfect? Not Without A Good Night’s Sleep
“So it seems to be that practice alone does not quite make perfect; it’s practice with a night of sleep that makes perfect” says Matthew Walker, a professor at the University of California, Berkeley. “There is this odd notion that we all have in western society that we have to stay awake all the time in order to get more done. And I think that is simply not true. In fact, I think that if you get a good night’s sleep, you will find that you can get more done than if you simply stay awake.”
Caffeine, energy drinks, and other methods of staying awake are amazingly popular; the idea that being wide awake and alert equals productivity is indeed a popular one in western civilization. However, keeping yourself artificially energized (and then resorting to sleep aids when it is finally time to go to sleep) is actually detrimental to your productivity and overall well-being.
Instead of depriving yourself of necessary rest, getting a solid night of restorative sleep is can result in a major energy boost - you will be able to accomplish more and perform better the following day. Even a quick nap (with Speed Sleep, all you need a half hour and you’ll awake feeling rejuvenated) is a better choice than another cup of coffee.
Clearly, the real formula for success is “practice plus a good night’s sleep makes perfect”!
