Sleep aids - over the counter pills and prescriptions - are the primary alternatives for people looking for a quick fix to get a good amount of sleep. However, taking a sleep aid that forces the body to sleep is perhaps one of the worst ways to get an accurate and healthy amount of sleep. The human brain is not dumb; it can recognize when an artificial sleeping agent is affecting its patterns of functionality. The result of using taking a pill to get “better” sleep usually comes with multiple negative forms known on the warning labels as: side effects.

ANN ARBOR, Mich., Jan. 16, 2009 – Use of prescription sleep drugs nearly tripled among 18- to 24-year-olds between 1998 and 2006, according to a study released today by the Healthcare business of Thomson Reuters.

According to the upcoming September issue of Consumer Reports magazine, too many people are dependent on both prescription sleep medications and over the counter sleep aids. The magazine staff performed a nation wide survey and discovered that forty-four percent of Americans are problem sleepers. Sleep problems are defined as difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep, or consistently waking up too early. Furthermore, one in five Americans use prescription or over-the-counter drugs - and twenty-four percent became dependent on those sleep aids.
