Sleep aids in medication form often do more harm then good. The idea of popping a pill and falling into a blissful state of heavy rest may very well sound like a dream come true for insomniacs and others with problems sleeping. This rebound effect leads to more and more dependency on the medication that is supposedly helping you.
Dependency on sleep aids like pills isn’t always just a craving for them, like a hunger that must be satisfied. Often, drug dependencies take form in a way that you begin to need a drug to feel normal or to reach a state of feeling just okay. And the stress that results from insomnia and sleeplessness compounds the need to feel normal and healthy, leading to a viscous cycle of drug dependency that need not have begun in the first place.
When choosing the proper sleep aid, always focus on picking something that will induce sleep naturally. Warping the chemical composition of your brain with drugs will ultimately lead to a downward spiral of dependency and a false feeling of well-being. To actually be healthy, the body and mind need natural rest resulting from actual sleep, not sleep-like states induced by drugs.
